Simon was speaking almost in his ear. Ralph found that he had a rock painfully gripped in both hands, found his body arched, the muscles of his neck stiff, his mouth strained open. "You'll get back to where you came from." Simon nodded as he spoke. PAGE 111
I chose this passage because it shows how even Ralph is starting to break down and lose hope that they will make it home. It also shows that there are still some who believe they will make it off the island alive.
"Ralph turned his hand over and examined them. They were bitten down to the quick though he could not remember when he had restarted this habit nor any time when he indulged it." "Be sucking my thumb next-" Pg.109
I chose this passage because it represents an example of how the kids are slowly wandering away from civilization and society. It may also foreshadow the future of the kids to the point where they will lose it all and regress as human beings. - Chad R.
"Behind them the silver of moon had drawn clear of the horizon. Before them, something like a great ape was sitting asleep with its head between its knees. Then the wind roared in the forest, there was confusion in the darkness and the creature lifted its head, holding toward them the ruin of a face." Pg. 123
I chose this passage because it shows how the boys let their fear cloud their judgement and makes them unable to realize what the beast actually is.
Presently they were all jabbing at Robert who made mock rushes. Jack shouted. "Make a ring!" The circle moved in and round. Robert squealed in mock terror, then in real pain. "Ow! Stop it! You're hurting!" The butt end of the spear fell on his back as he blundered among them. "Hold him!" They got his arms and legs. Ralph, carried away by a sudden thick excitement, grabbed Eric's spear and jabbed at Robert with it "Kill him! Kill him!" -Pg. 114
This is a powerful passage because it shows that the boys are starting to get violent, even Ralph is getting carried away and harming another human.
"Someone's got to go across the island and tell Piggy we'll be back after dark." Bill spoke, unbelieving. "Through the forest by himself? Now?" "We can't spare more than one." Simon pushed his way to Ralph's elbow." "I'll go if you like. I don't mind, honestly." Before Ralph had time to reply, he smiled quickly, turned and climbed into the forest. pg. 117
I chose this passage because this again shows us how Simon doesn't mind being alone in the forest. Where the rest of them are to scared to be alone there. Shannon F.
"I'm going up the mountain." The words came from Jack viciously, as though they were a curse. He looked at Ralph, his thin body tensed, his spear held as if he threatened him.
I chose this passage because it shows how the tension between Ralph and Jack is increasing.
"The boar was floundering away from them. They found another pig-run parallel to the first and jack raced away. Ralph was full of freight and apprehension and pride"
I chose this quote because it shows the kids really adapting. They can fend for themselves and live on their own.
"Attention focussed on Jack. 'That's a wound,' said Simon, 'and you ought to suck it. Like Berengaria.' Jack sucked. 'I hit him,' said Ralph indignantly. 'I hit him with my spear, I wounded him.' He tried for their attention." -pg. 114 ;)
This passage shows how Ralph has changed because at the beginning of the book he didn't care what other people thought, people flocked to him without trying. At this point in the book, Ralph is trying to make people like him. -John Eide-
"Someone's got to go across the island and tell Piggy we'll be back after dark."Bill spoke, unbelieving."Through the forest by himself? Now?" "We can't spare more than one."Simon pushed his way to Ralph's elbow. "I'll go if you like. I don't mind, honestly."
pg. 125
This tells us a little bit about Simon's character. How he is not much of a fighter and would rather go and make sure the liluns and piggy are okay
"He discovered with a little fall of the heart that these were the conditions he took as normal now and that he did not mind." Page 110
I chose this passage because it shows how much the boys are getting used to the island, and how, if they go back home, they will have a harder time adjusting.
They got his arms and legs. Ralph, carried away by a sudden thick excitement, grabbed Eric's spear and jabbed at Robert with it. "Kill him! Kill him!" pg. 114
I chose this passage because is shows that the boys are beginning to be violent towards each other. Of course they justify it by just saying they were playing. Even Ralph is beginning to act carelessly.
"'I'm going up the mountain to look for the beast–now.' Then the supreme sting, the casual, bitter word. 'Coming?' At that word the other boys forgot their urge to be gone and turned back to sample this fresh rub of two spirits in the dark. The word was too good, too bitter, too successfully daunting to be repeated. It took Ralph at low water when his nerve was relaxed for the return to the shelter and the still, friendly waters of the lagoon. pg. 121-122
I chose this passage because it shows that Jack is really getting under Ralph's skin, because Jack wants to be the leader.
"'Kill the pig! Cut his throat! Kill the pig! Bash him in!' Ralph too was fighting to get near, to get a handful of that brown, vulnerable flesh. The desire to squeeze and hurt was over-mastering. Jack's arm came down; the heaving circle cheered and made pig-dying noises. Then they lay quiet, panting, listening to Robert's frightened snivels." page 115
I chose this passage because while I was reading I noticed the comparison between the boys and animals and it's almost exact. It's obvious how much the boys have changed.
"Someone's got to go across the island and tell Piggy we'll be back after dark."

"I'll go if you like. I don't mind, honestly."
I chose this quote because it shows that Simon is more comfortable in the forest alone than with the boys. He is more mature and less susceptible to childish fears
SImon pushed his way to Ralph's elbow "I'll go if you like. I don't mind, honestly." Before Ra;ph has time to reply, he smiled quickly, turned and climbed into the forest. pg 117
I choose this passage because it shows a little more about Simon's character, he is not creepy or shy. I believe he is either crazy or really dumb.
"When you went to bed there was a bowl of cornflakes with sugar and cream. And the books-they stood on the shelf by the bed, leaning together with always two or three laid flat on top because he had not bothered to put them back properly." (112).
I chose this passage because it shows even Ralph is beginning to miss home, not just the small boys on the island.
"Maurice spoke , hesitating, not wanting to seem a funk. 'Suppose the beast's up there?' Jack brandished his spear. 'We'll kill it.' The sun seemed a little cooler. He slashed with the spear." p 116
I chose this passage because Jack is a spaz and keeps trying to act like a tough guy. He is violent.
"That was a good game" "Just a game" Ralph said uneasily
I chose this because they beat up this kid for no reason. Just to have fun. Jack doesn't regret it, but Ralph is uneasy about it. Jack is getting worse.
"We can't leave the littleluns alone with Piggy. Not all night." The other boys said nothing but stood rund, watching him. "If we went back we should take hours." Jack cleared his throat and spoke in a queer, tight voice. "We mustn't let anything happen to Piggy, must we?" pg. 117
I chose this passage because of the unknown thought that is going around everyone's mind. That is the survival of the fittest. The littleluns and Piggy are the least fit to survive out of the group. Clare F.

"'I hit him all right. The spear stuck in. I wounded him!' He stunned himself in their new respect and felt that hunting was good after all." pg 113.
I chose this passage because it shows that Ralph is starting to realize that hunting is a necessity to survive.

""I hit him,' said Ralph again, 'and the spear stuck in a bit.' He felt the need of witnesses. 'Didn't you see me?'
I chose this passage because it almost seems like Ralph is becoming a little blood thirsty. He wants to hunt know just like Jack always wants to do.
