you are a silly little boy, said the lord of flies, just an ignorant, silly little boy. Simon moved his swollen tongue but said nothing. Don't agree? said the lord of flies. aren't you a silly little boy? Simon answered him in the same silent voice. Well then, said the lord of the flies youd better run off and play with the others. they think your batty. you do not want ralph to think you are batty, do you? you like ralph a lot, don't you? and piggy and jack?
“There isn’t anyone to help you. Only me. And I’m the Beast. . . . Fancy thinking the Beast was something you could hunt and kill! . . . You knew, didn’t you? I’m part of you? Close, close, close! I’m the reason why it’s no go? Why things are the way they are?” pg 143
I chose this passage because it proves that Simons's theory was right. That the beast is in their heads, and they technically are the beast. Clare F.
"He laid the conch with great care in the grass at his feet. The humiliating tears were running from the corner of each eye. "I'm not going to play any longer. Not with you.'" Page 127
I chose this passage because it shows that no matter how these boys act they are still children. Jack was being such a strong man and a leader of sorts, and when he gets turned down he cries and says he won't play anymore.
s"Fancy thinking the beast was something you could hunt and kill!" said the head. For a moment or two the forest and all the other dimly appreciated places echoed with parody and laughter.
I chose this passage because it seems as if Simon is either going crazy or this beat really does exist but it is not a living thing.
" 'He's like Piggy. He says things like Piggy. He isn't a proper chief.' Jack clutched the conch to himself. 'He's a coward himself.'" pg.126
I chose this passage because it is showing how Jack is finally taking control, saying Ralph is not good enough to be chief. He is also outing Ralph for being smart and thinking only about the fire, never hunting. Shannon F.
At length even this palled. Jack began to clean his bloody hands on the rock. Then he started work on the sow and paunched her, lugging out the hot bags of colored guts, pushing them into a pile on the rock while the others watched him. -pg. 136
I chose this to show how much Jack has changed. At the beginning of the story Jack was hesitant to kill a pig, but now he has no problem killing the pigs.
"I've called an assembly," said Jack, "because of a lot of things. First, you know now, we've seen the beast. We crawled up. We were only a few feet away. The beast sat up and looked at us. I don't know what it does. We don't even know what it is ----." PAGE 125
I chose this passage because it shows how its not only Ralph getting to call meetings. Jack is taking charge and is still trying to be a leader. It also shows how they are still afraid and trying to find out what the beast is.
"'I'm warning you. I'm going to get angry. D'you see? You're not wanted. Understand? We are going to have fun on this island. Understand? We are going to have fun on this island! So don't try it on, my poor misguided boy, or else--'" pg.144
I chose this passage because now you are expecting more things to happen throughout the book involving the beast, or the Lord of the Flies.
"For the first time on the island, Piggy himself removed his one glass, knelt down and focused the sun on the tinder. Soon there was a ceiling of smoke and a bush of yellow flame." - Pg. 130
This passage is significant because Piggy's Id is slowly showing when he takes it upon himself to start the fire. - Chad R.
"The silence continued, breathless and heavy and full of shame. Slowly the red drained from Jack's cheeks, then came back with a painful rush. He licked his lips and turned his head at an angle, so that his gaze avoided the embarrassment of linking with another's eye." pg. 127
I chose this passage, because it shows that Jack thought the boys would want him to be chief instead of Ralph, but he was wrong and now he is embarrassed.
"They were just behind her when she staggered into a space where bright flowers grew and butterflies danced round each other and the air was hot and still... Then Jack found the throat and the hot blood spouted over his hands. The sow collapsed under them and they were heavy and fulfilled upon her. The butterflies still dances, preoccupied in the center of the clearing." Page 135
I chose this passage because the comparison between the scenery and what is going on with the pigs is frightening. The butterflies don't mind what is going on, almost as if it's normal and the boys are completely focused on killing this pig in such a beautiful place.
"When I saw Jack I was sure he'd go for the conch. Can't think why." The group of boys looked at the white shell with affectionate respect. Piggy placed it in Ralph's hand and the littluns, seeing the familiar symbol, started to come back.
pg. 141
I chose this passage because to me it shows how the conch symbolizes law and order to the boys. It gives a levelheadedness to Ralph's leadership whereas Jack's is barbaric.
"Can't you see? Can't they understand? Without the smoke signal we'll die here? Look at that!" pg 139
I Choose this passage because we can see that Ralph and Piggy are on the same page and want to survive, but they can not do it without the help from little kids
"'The fire's the most important thing. Without the fire we can't be rescued. I'd like to put on war-paint and be a savage. But we must keep the fire burning. The fire's the most important thing on the island, because, because-' He paused again and the silence became full of doubt and wonder." - pg. 142
Ralph still wants the fire and is staying true to himself

"The boys began to babble. Only Piggy could have the intellectual daring to suggest moving the fire from the mountain."
Pg. 129
I chose this passage because it shows the Piggy is clearly the smartest out of all the boys and he deserves to be in charge.

"Instinctively the boys drew back too: and the forest was very still."
This passage shows that even the boys proud of being hunters, they are still scared of what is out there.

"What are you doing out here all alone? Aren't you afraid of me?"
Simon shook his head
"There isn't anyone to help you. Only me. And I'm the beast"
I chose this because we finally meet to beast. Simon is acting very strange, stranger then he normally is.
Madeline Baldwin
"Simon was inside the mouth. He fell down and lost consciousness." (144).
I chose this passage because it was very confusing to me, along with the whole incident with the Lord of the Flies.
